Head Injury ( Neurotrauma and Spine injury)

An injury to the brain caused by various factors can be referred to as a brain injury. The resulting damage can range from mild to severe and may lead to temporary or permanent disabilities/ even loss of life.

It is essential to recognize that the impact of brain injury is highly unpredictable and can result in various physical, emotional, and social consequences. Patients often struggle to perform routine daily activities. Moreover, brain injuries can cause personality changes, depression and anxiety, which can profoundly affect an individual's mental health and physical well-being. It is critical to be aware of these factors and seek medical support to manage them effectively. Rehabilitation, counseling, and therapy can help patients regain their self-confidence and keep them functioning correctly in society. The road to recovery may be long and challenging, but with patience, perseverance, and the help of a compassionate Neurosurgeon, it is possible to overcome the obstacles and carve out a new path towards a productive life.

A majority of neurotrauma patients can be treated with a conservative (non-surgical) approach. Patients who have diffuse axonal injuries or where surgery is not indicated should be treated under strict Neurosurgical surveillance.

However, some of the common conditions that require surgical treatment include:

  • Subdural Hematoma
  • Extradural hematoma
  • Depressed fracture skull
  • Burst lobes
  • Penetrating head injuries

It is imperative to take preventive measures to avoid such injuries and seek medical attention immediately in the event of a physical trauma that may result in a potential brain injury.

Indications to seek medical help include:

  • Loss of Consciousness
  • Bleeding from nose/mouth
  • Black eye
  • Vomiting & Headache
  • Penetrating head injuries
