Vascular Neurosurgery

Vascular Neurosurgery is a highly specialized field of neurosurgery that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

This includes disorders affecting the blood vessels, veins, and arteries supplying the brain and spinal cord. The main goal of vascular neurosurgery is to prevent severe damage to the brain or spinal cord, which can be caused by bleeding or interruption of blood flow.

Some of the common cerebrovascular entities that vascular neurosurgeons diagnose and treat, include:
  • Cerebral Aneurysms
  • Blockage of intracerebral vessels
  • Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the brain and spinal cord
  • Carotid stenosis / Blockages
  • Cerebral hemorrhage
  • Moyamoya disease
  • Vascular tumors of the brain and spinal cord

Vascular neurosurgeons use state-of-the-art technology and advanced techniques such as endovascular surgery, Microneurosurgery, and stereotactic radiosurgery to provide the best possible care to their patients.

The success of vascular neurosurgery largely depends on the complexity of the condition and the overall health of the patient. A multidisciplinary approach involving a high-end neurosurgical facility, intervention Neuroradiology & advance intensive care facility is needed.

Cerebral Aneurysms are treated with clipping surgically by a Neurosurgeon or coiling by an Intervention Neuroradiologist. Cerebral and spinal AVM can be excised completely surgically by a Neurosurgeon or embolised using glue.
