Spine Surgery (Lumbar and Cervical Disc Prolapse Surgery)

Lumbar surgery, also called lower back surgery, is a medical procedure that involves making incisions in the lower back region to access the lumbar spine. This is typically done to alleviate acute/chronic lower back pain that is radiating to lower limbs and doesn't respond to other treatments such as physiotherapy or medication. There are a few different types of lumbar surgeries, including discectomy, laminectomy, and fusion. Recovery time can vary depending on the specific procedure and the recovery process of an individual.

Patients can be discharged after surgery as early as on the 2nd or 3rd day. Most of the patients after disc prolapse surgery can be made to walk on the next day of surgery.

Some of the common Spine conditions requiring surgery include:

  • Cervical disc surgery(for severe pain radiating to one or both arms due to cervical disc prolapse)
  • Cervical Laminectomy(For cervical canal stenosis or OPLL "Ossified posterior longitudinal ligament"
  • Lumbar disc surgery (for Sciatica or severe pain radiating to one or both legs from the lower back due to nerve compression by a prolapsed intervertebral disc.
  • Lumbar Laminectomy (for lumbar canal stenosis & neurogenic claudication.)
  • Cervical lateral mass fixation (for stabilization of unstable cervical spine.)
  • Dorsal and lumbar pedicle screw fixation(for fracture dislocation of spine & vertebral Column)
  • Spinal CSF leakage or fistula repair surgery
  • Lumbo-peritoneal shunt
  • Surgery for AAD (Atlantoaxial Dislocation) etc.
